"Whenever it's on it's like having somebody in my house that I want to get rid of and they won't leave. I hate the sound of it. All that noise and light coming from a piece of furniture."

Netflix + XBox = Movies on Demand PDF Print E-mail

Microsoft announced today that their XBox game console will serve up movies from Netflix. It's yet another step forward in the video on demand (VoD) journey we are on, but not a very big one: Netflix has had movies on demand via their "Watch Instantly" service for some time now, with Windows Media Player being the vehicle, so there isn't a lot that's new here. The announcement is probably in response to moves Sony has been making with its PS3 and it may make some small difference, since the acceptability of having a game console in your living room is greater than just having a clunky old beige PC.

Still, considering the Netflix "Watch Instantly" service is completely free for Netflix subscribers, but the new XBox feature requires both Netflix and an XBox Live Gold subscription, this probably only makes sense for people that already have both of those. In other words, it's hard to see how this will generate any additional income for either company.
