Canon revealed their next generation XH camera. While some Canon fans thought for sure their newest video camera would be based on the dSLR fad and an APS-C sensor, those in the know who have watched Canon for years knew the traditionally conservative company - who's still and video divisions are separated by a wide inter-corporate gulf - would announce another incremental advance, with legendary glass up front and proven technology at the back end. This is what Canon has always done and is the primary reason their video gear is always a solid, risk-free choice for professionals and amateurs alike.

Only speculation at this point, since Canon has only revealed a prototype and the nearest anyone can get is taking photos of it through a glass enclosure. From these photos, we know it's got a fixed lens, probably 20x. A best guess is that it'll have CCDs and not CMOS, but who knows? We do know that it will have solid state media. For stills? Definitely. For video? Well, remember what we said about Canon and tradition. The extent of Canon’s hype has been its description of, “Fairubesubideokamera,” or file-based video camera. Interesting.

(def-edit: For those that might criticize Canon for moving too slowly, I'll just say that the weekend before last I shot with a crew using a Panasonic HVX200, an old SD Canon XL2 and an old SD Canon GL2, and the GL2 was by far the most fun to use, the easiest to control and also got our best shot on a couple of occasions! The latest bleeding edge tech isn't always your best choice and we made a ton of money using SD cameras - and that's the bottom line!)

This thread discusses the Content article: Canon Reveals Their Next Generation Camera

Right on, Jeff, and to everyone that was surprised by this camera: I told you so. Someday, Canon Still and Canon Video might collaborate on a project and I know they know each other, but they are in different buildings and have different engineers. Besides, even if Canon DID come out with a dSLR video camera, 10:1 says it would suck at stills. Just sayin'. And, more importantly, there's different marketing staffs and, MOST IMPORTANTLY different markets: Why create a $2,500 dream dSLR video camera, when you can sell a $2,000 dSLR that shoots nice video AND a $2,000 video camera that rocks the house? I'm not saying Canon is being evil and manipulative, just smart. And, when someone does eventually release the magically hybrid camera with a large sensor, Canon is still well-poised to blow it out of the water almost immediately with better glass.

If I had to put bets on the first largish format CMOS camcorder, I'd put my money on Sony. On the other hand, Minolta Still, *ahem*, sorry, Sony Still and Sony Video might be on opposite shores of an even wider gulf (I've been out of the industry for a while now), so maybe Samsung will break into the low-pro market with a beast based on a Sony imaging sensor.

Crazy wonderful times and it's great to have all of these choices. These are breakthrough times for indie filmmakers.

eh, REALLY think most of the "disappointment" that we are hearing, and yea, I'm whining a bit too. is basically because of the CCD/CMOS.

Its like a poker Game, most of the time you don't know what the other guy has, you gotta a feeling but you don't know. BUT Canon "revealed" too much this year. I do happen to agree with other critics that Canon had no idea what they were doing with regard to video in the Mark5D. Its Great but they didn't know, but they should have!!

I've had Canons, I loved my XL1s, great camera,I love canon! BUT they tipped their hand, Great Designs like the XLH1 and then the monster Sensor in the DSLR. John Q public saw their cards and were "Expecting" much more.

Canon is a power house, they have the cash flow to sit back and ride, and when they do something they got it right, good for them but those like me who hate to wait, it tears me up.

I was a very early adopter of the XL-1 (I'm alarmed at how long ago that was...), and ditto the XL-H1. While I must admit that I'm casting an eager eye across the new line of DSLR's for my next camera, I still have a lot of room to grow with the XL-H1. I really feel like Canon gave that camera their all, I was amazed at all the functionality built in (though I would have been happier to have the software for controlling the camera from a laptop to be included in the box).

If I get another camera this year, it'll be a Canon DSLR, but if I'm looking for more studio type cams for my TriCaster HD setup, they'll be Canon video cameras. I'm a second generation Canon man, after all...
