The venerable Technicolor company is throwing its considerable weight behind a new technology: 3D. It's been over 75 years since the company invented the three-strip color process,  forever changing the course of movie history. Can they do it again? "Broadcast 3D is a natural extension of the many services we're already providing," said Chuck Parker, president of Technicolor's Digital Content Delivery business, as reported by The Inquirer, covering an event at Technicolor's Chiswick facility in London today. While 6-7% of theaters are digital 3D ready, film is still the dominant distribution media and the new film-based 3D technology from Technicolor is set to fill the gap. Still, you have to wonder, if everything is already going digital, how long will this gap exists and, more importantly, isn't it already being gradually filled by digital projection?

Parker warns that bad 3D content that would do more harm than good to general adoption (as was discussed here), but still argued that mass adoption was "inevitable" on a timeline of about five years. So, to all you 3D naysayers out there (*ahem*), you've got James Cameron, movie theaters, the television manufacturing industry and now Technicolor workin' to prove you wrong. And to all you 3D fans, the future's so bright, you gotta wear anaglyph shades.

I think part of the problem I, and most people, have with the 3D craze stems from its hype. We keep expecting heaven on earth (in 3D, and HD), and it can't live up to that.

So that begs the question, what perfect format of movie would both promote story and immerse movie watchers within the world of the movie? What would this future version of 3D look like that **could** live up to the hype? What's better than 3D? The Holodeck?

Full Disclosure: Don't take my slamming of 3D too seriously, I'm blind in one eye and (obviously) love being a contrarian. Plus, far be it for me to say what you should enjoy or not...I'll also say that my favorite 3D scene ever was in a TERRIBLE b-movie that I cannot remember the name of that had a fantastic rock slide where this one boulder rolled right off the screen and into the audience and made everyone flinch, jump and gasp! Too fun. So fun, in fact, that at the next reel change, the audience started chanting "Play the rock slide! Play the rock slide!" until the projectionist STOPPED the movie and put that reel back on and we watched that scene 5 more times and never finished the film. In that case, the 3D was BETTER than the movie, so there's that.

I thought the The Movie Studios' Big 3D Scam was particularly relevant: Bad 3D makes all 3D look, well bad. And there's some good 3D out there, namely Avatar. Can anyone think of any live-action that had good 3D?
