Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I apologize for not spending more time on the site these last few months, but - in addition to helping support my mother during her serious fight with cancer (she’s doing well now, thanks!) and attempting to create a video department at a major international corporation - I have been extremely busy. Want proof? How about an Emmy award!

Yes, a videopia.org produced video won a Suncoast Emmy Award this year. On the Origin in 4 Minutes was created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species in 1859 and to explain evolution in a non-confrontational way. I partnered with our county environmental center and we broadcast the segment on one of the local public-access cable channels. The program was entered in the Science Program category and - miracle of miracles - was honored with a nomination! Frankly, I didn’t expect to win and  was entirely content with simply being in the running for an Emmy. After all, Angela Landsbury has been nominated for an Emmy Award 18 times and hasn’t won (yet), so I was extremely proud to get the nod, even if winning was a long shot. So confident was I that I wouldn’t win, I didn’t even bother to go to the awards ceremony.

I guess I should have gone.

One interesting little side note here: On the Origin in 4 Minutes was passed over for a Telly Award earlier in the year (while Energize: The Star Trek Transporter Effect managed to win a highest honor Silver Telly Award). So what gives? Good enough for an Emmy, but not good enough for a Telly? "Sweet revenge" is what I'd call it, but there's a better story here...which will have to wait until the publication of the second edition of my book, Videopia: Video Literacy in the 21st Century. I'm working on a full revision in a new e-book format (with video!) with a number of new chapters, including "How to Win an Emmy." Stay tuned...

Congratulations Eric! Though we've discussed our differences on the topic, the video itself was deserving of the honor. I still have a copy of it on my desktop at home!

Happy New Year!
